An Apple a Day

AN APPLE A DAY

Happy Fall, y’all! It’s apple season and we are here for it! Apples are so healthy for you- They can help lower high cholesterol and blood pressure, aid digestion, support a healthy immune system, and are a diabetic-friendly fruit. In fact, eating an apple a day lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes by 28%. Apples are also loaded with fiber and pectin to help with digestion. Most of that comes from the apple skin, so try not to peel it off if you can! Recent studies show that antioxidants in apples may help prevent cancer, too! Apples are such a popular fruit that farmers often spray pesticides on them to help prevent bugs and other pests from getting to them. Even if you wash an apple, it’s unclear if the pesticides are also fully washed off. For this reason, go for organic apples as they’ll have the least amount of chemicals on them, though it is not unsafe to eat non-organic apples. To wash an apple, clean it with a produce brush under running water. We recommend trying Honeycrisp apples (they stay fresh for a long time!) with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Apples go great in smoothies, salads, or as a delicious snack smothered with almond butter.
