55 FITNESS is the brainchild of Brendan Skeen. After over 20 years in the senior homecare industry Mr. Skeen identified the tremendous demand for a fitness facility designed to meet the specific needs of the rapidly growing 55 and over population. Together with his mother, Donna Skeen, who herself has over 40 years of experience in senior services and mental health services set out to revolutionize the fitness industry. 55 FITNESS is a gym where mature adults can improve their overall health and wellness in a truly unintimidating environment surrounded by a supportive community of peers.

First, I want to thank all of you who have reached out and expressed interest in becoming a member of 55 Fitness and your excitement about our opening day. Many of you have also expressed your disappointment about the delay caused by the Covid-19 crisis and I want to personally thank you for your patience as we navigate through these uncharted waters. Although we originally planned to open in March, but we were unable to do so because of Governor Kemp’s shut down order which included gyms and fitness centers. However, I could not be happier to announce that we will be opening our brand-new location in Alpharetta on June 1.

I’m sure you are wondering what we will do to ensure your safety when visiting fitness center. Please rest assured that we meet or exceed all federal, state & local guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19. We have carefully reviewed all guidelines and recommendations put in place for public safety. Our policies reflect the protocols to protect the health and safety of all of our members and staff. These policies and procedures will remain in place until further notice.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. We will need to operate a little differently for the foreseeable future but please know that the health and safety of everyone is our primary concern. Through following these practices, we are minimizing risk and allowing you to reclaim a normal part of your life.

Our Commitment

Staff Members will:

  • Diligently sanitize surfaces and equipment according to the CDC guidelines and 55 Fitness standards
  • Be required have their temperature taken prior to the start of every shift
  • Wear face masks at all times
  • Spray and wipe down all equipment following each use
  • Wash hands for 20 seconds before each session or st a minimum of once each hour
  • ULV fog all equipment and surfaces with a hospital grade disinfectant 3 times per day
For Our Members

For our Members we will:

  • Operate at ½ our normal capacity to maintain safe distance
  • Check every member and guest’s temperature prior to admittance
  • Ensure all members and guests maintain a safe social distance at all time
  • Ensure that all members and guests wear a face mask in the fitness center
  • Ensure all members and guests use hand sanitizer prior to admittance
  • All towels will be professionally cleaned by Aramark with bleach and a minimum wash temperature of 150 degrees

The COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented and as communities begin to ease restrictions, it's important to keep taking steps to protect yourself from COVID-19 when you visit a gym or public space. You should always follow the guidance of the public health officials where you live keeping in mind that restrictions vary among cities and states. If you're at higher risk of serious illness, you might consider delaying a return to the gym at this time.

Like all public spaces where people gather, gyms and fitness centers are places where viral illnesses including COVID-19 can spread. The shared weights and exercise equipment, sweaty stretching areas, and heavy breathing may cause you anxiety. However, gyms don't necessarily pose a risk greater than any other public space. Based on the research so far, COVID-19 appears to spread primarily through close personal contact with an infected person.

When it comes to the gym, there’s some good news: “We know that the coronavirus is not found in sweat,” says Amesh Adalja, M.D., an infectious disease physician, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security.

COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, appears to spread primarily when people cough or sneeze and respiratory droplets land on other people or surfaces nearby. “Heavy breathing during exercise won’t shed the virus, but it’s coughing or sneezing that we’re concerned about” says Manish Trivedi, M.D., director of the division of infectious diseases and chairman of infection prevention and control at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Respiratory droplets can spread up to six feet, which is why public health officials recommend putting this distance between yourself and others. Objects in the gym that are touched frequently, including exercise machines, mats, and dumbbells could potentially serve as a reservoir for viruses and other germs because people may cough into their hands and then use equipment.

The best way to prevent COVID-19 is to avoid exposure. You should wear a cloth face covering in the gym and your fitness center will likely enforce social distancing of least 6 feet (2 meters) distance between members. Also be vigilant about cleaning equipment before and after using it. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and/or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol before and after your workout. Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth at all times. Avoid touching anything to your face, such as a towel, that has been in contact with any communal surfaces. Perhaps most importantly, if you do not feel well you should under no circumstances visit a gym.

Whether your gym is doing extra cleaning or not, your own actions are vital for protecting the health and safety of yourself and the other gym members.
